No More Superstars!

Updated: Jul 20, 2023

Heffernan (2015) shares that gone are the days where we rely on a certain pecking order as a necessity for growth and success, which is a concept I completely agree with. But, as I reflected, I noticed this idea was from 2015, and had to wonder as we reach the middle of 2023 when will this concept truly be accepted. The best leaders understand they are unable to accomplish a task alone, and know the importance of surrounding themselves with individuals that all offer important and unique talents. However, in the educational system the pecking order is evident and often displayed by organizational charts so the “superstars” are clearly identified. While this is not true for all school districts, the culture of helping one another grow professionally through collaboration is something to aim for not only throughout a school, but an entire district.

Many educators understand the importance of bringing out the best in every single student. However, what I offer as a new concept or a point of emphasis is the importance of creating an environment where students feel comfortable connecting and collaborating with one another, which truly allows for growth and development. It is through us helping one another and yes, even students helping one another, that individuals are able to reach their full potential, that classrooms are able to reach the greatest heights, and organizations are able to obtain the greatest amount of growth. We've seen this before through peer-to-peer teaching and peer-to-peer learning. However, this requires teachers to understand they may have to take a backseat and not be the “superstar” in the classroom and allow for authentic learning and engagement with students to cultivate an environment of peer helping and learning. Everyone will shine when there are no more superstars!
