Perception on Growth Mindset

Updated: Jul 20, 2023

It’s amazing the impact a word can have on one’s future and potential. Applying the word “yet” to a challenge, obstacle, or difficulty faced in life or school has the ability to change the overall outcome and trajectory of that situation. Now I wish it was as simple as saying the word “yet”, but one must also believe what “yet” represents. In the video Developing a Growth Mindset, Carol Dweck shared when faced with a challenge the word yet provides students with the understanding they have not failed but instead are working towards achieving a desired goal. For (Dweck, 2014) educators to apply the mindset of “yet” which equates to a growth mindset, they should praise students wisely, in a manner that leads to growth. Educators should also share the benefits of challenges with students, and that challenges face foster connections in the brain that increase intelligence. Furthermore, the power of words, specifically the word “yet” can increase confidence and boost persistence. The Power of Belief- mindset and success video also expands upon the growth mindset with the notion that intelligence can be developed through focusing on learning -growth mindset, opposed to the final grade - fixed mindset (Briceno, 2012). Although it may be difficult to accept, failure is a part of growing and does not mean one is not capable of something.

The resources used to change from a fixed to a growth mindset or to share the benefits of a growth mindset should be relevant to the audience. Videos of scholars sharing research is great information. But, we know we have to reach the head and the heart. One individual who has promoted the growth mindset in Kobe Bryant, which he coined Mamba Mentality. Through this mentality of growth mindset Kobe shared, “everything negative — pressure, challenges — is all an opportunity for me to rise” (Carter, 2020). There are a host of athletes, musicians, and other famous individuals that have displayed growth mindset without using that particular terminology. Having it relatable and easily understandable to the audience may assist with shifting to or enhancing the growth mindset.
